What is a STAR story bank?
It is a preparation inventory. Each entry captures the factual Situation, Task, Action and Result, the competencies the experience demonstrates, and the question categories it might support. The goal is faster, more flexible recall—not a library of scripted speeches.
How many STAR stories should you prepare?
For many interviews, six to ten varied experiences provide a practical starting range. The right number depends on the role and your experience. Coverage matters more than volume: several distinct examples of ownership, collaboration, challenge, change and results are more useful than ten versions of the same success story.
Choose experiences with range
- A meaningful achievement with a clear contribution.
- A difficult problem requiring diagnosis or judgment.
- A disagreement or stakeholder challenge handled constructively.
- A mistake, setback or result that taught you something.
- A moment when priorities or requirements changed.
- An example of initiative, leadership or improvement.
Experiences can come from employment, education, volunteering or serious projects when they are relevant and accurately represented.
Map stories to competencies
Create a simple matrix with stories on one axis and competencies on the other. Mark only the competencies for which the story contains real evidence. A story can support several categories, but it should not be stretched to claim every skill.
Avoid repetitive examples
If every answer comes from one project, interviewers may receive a narrow picture of your experience. Prepare different environments, challenges and relationships. Within a single interview, track which examples you have already used and switch when another credible story is available.
Practice without sounding memorized
- Write bullets for the facts, not a polished paragraph.
- Practice answering different question wordings with the same story.
- Change the emphasis while keeping facts stable.
- Record one practice attempt and remove unnecessary background.
- Keep natural language; do not force labels such as “Situation” into the spoken answer.
