Behavioral question map

STAR interview questions are easier when you see the category behind them.

Do not prepare a separate script for every possible wording. Identify what the question is testing, then select a real story with the right evidence.

Ten useful question categories

Leadership

When did you create direction, influence others or take responsibility without waiting for authority?

Conflict

How did you address disagreement while protecting the work and the relationship?

Failure

What went wrong, what did you own and how did your behavior change afterward?

Problem solving

How did you diagnose an unclear problem, compare options and choose a course?

Teamwork

How did you contribute to a shared outcome and help the group work effectively?

Prioritization

How did you make tradeoffs when several important demands competed for attention?

Difficult stakeholders

How did you understand concerns, set expectations and move work forward?

Initiative

When did you recognize an opportunity or risk and act before being directed?

Adaptability

How did you respond when requirements, resources or circumstances changed?

Achievement

What meaningful result did you produce, and which decisions made it possible?

Can one STAR story answer multiple questions?

Yes, when the experience contains evidence for more than one competency. A product launch might demonstrate prioritization if you emphasize tradeoffs, teamwork if you emphasize coordination, or adaptability if you explain how you handled a late requirement change.

The facts should not change. The relevant lens can. This is why a smaller bank of well-understood stories is usually more useful than dozens of brittle scripts.

How to choose the story

  1. Identify the behavior the interviewer is trying to understand.
  2. Choose a recent, relevant example in which your contribution is clear.
  3. Prefer an experience with observable decisions and a concrete outcome.
  4. Answer the exact question, even if another story sounds more impressive.
